Anna Harrison defends using the cheerlift |
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking allows for multiple responses, various perspectives and interpretations. We watched the close-up interview, had an in-depth discussion and then we were asked to provide an opinion on the Mystics 'cheerlift'.
We are learning to develop and defend an opinion on a subject using critical thinking by considering various opinions and justifying our own beliefs.

i think that it is not cheating because it is another way to defend BUT it is going to change the game heaps because the attackers could do it too. I reckon they are going to turn ot into basketball and rugby joined together.
I think the 'cheerlift' is silly because if you don't realise the ball is in midair then you will get called for stepping and then the other team just gets the ball back. On the other hand they get it closer to the goal and then they can't do again because the opposition is too close to the hoop and then they will score.
It's not cheating, it's just a great way to get the ball back and the other team can do it if they want. Every year different sports change. If they do slam dunks it will just turn out like basketball.
Well, I guess it works. What works and is not in the rule book as a penalty is not cheating. I completely disagree with Yvonne Willering about the team or players putting their reputation on the line. The Mystics won that game because they have strategies so people shouldn't ridicule them or call them cheaters. Building on that Dick Fosbury innovated on the scissor jump and made the Fosbury Flop. That changed the high jump forever. He was ridiculed for his new way of doing it but later everyone was doing it. Later it was proven to be the most effective and safe way of getting over something.
I think it will catch on quickly. They should have checked the rules first but then sport is always changing so it should be alright. It may change the sport with shooting because they could lift the shooter up to drop the ball in the net.
I think that it is fair to defend when in the sky. Not all netball players are the same height so it may not work for everyone. This is a comparison to rugby when they lift up for the throw in because they didn't always do that.
I think it is fair because there is no rule about it and it is hard anyway so players wouldn't do it much but it should be a foul if they touch they net or the hoop.
The chairlift is NOT CHEATING because both of the teams could do it. They both have three seconds to do it so it's fair. It could change netball as we know it like the Fosbury Flop did to the high jump.
I think if they are not breaking any rules it should be allowed. A lot of sports change the rules for example in Rugby when they do the line out and now they lift the player up. I think only the defence side should use otherwise it will turn into basketball. Now the shorter players can move around the court positions and have more of a chance of getting into the team. The younger generation are already practicing the move so it is going to change the game.
I think this is a very clever technique. I think it is fair, they just need to be careful not to touch the hoop or net. It's just a new way to play netball! Lots of other sports have changed over time so it's fair that netball does too. It's just a creative way of defending and playing the game. I think it is good for their reputation and personally I'd like to see this technique even more. It's going to make netball even more fun! I think coaches need to support their teams and have a little faith that new techniques will work. If they did it in the 1990's for Rugby why can't netball do it in 2012 and onwards? Seriously..why not? I don't think it's going to change the Mystics reputation because there are already High School teams practicing the chairlift move. In other words they are looking up to the Mystics. There is nothing better than creating a move and having young players copy and practice it!
I don't think it is cheating because it's just a new fun way to play netball. Lots of other sports have changed so why can't netball. It's just a new tactic for them, a creative way of defending. It might even make the game a bit more fun. I also think that if the team wants to try something new their coach should be able to support them because it could change the game of netball, make it more exciting. It won't put their job on the line, it could even make them famous for doing something fun and exciting.
I think they are not cheating because nobody called it and it's not in the rule book. I think it will change netball forever!
I think the strategy is not a cheat. It's using team work and strategy. In swimming and other sports they are developing new tricks and techniques like the Fosbury Flop and non-friction swimwear.
They could make a new version of netball like turbotouch which is a modified version of gridiron and rugby. They've got a version of netball like speed netball that you get two points for a goal, I think it's in the olympics?
I agree it is just like a slam dunk if they use it to shoot as well.
In netball it can't be a slamdunk because a slamdunk is when you hang on or touch the hoop in basketball and you can't do that in netball. So if you want to call it a slamdunk you will have to change the rule about being able to touch the net.
It wouldn't be that good if you changed the way netball is played because it's fine the way it is. You could end up with more injuries if you brought in this cheerlift.
I think one little change isn't going to hurt the game because it's just making netball more creative but I do agree that if they change it too much it will end up like basketball.
By adding new moves I think it will encourage people to play more. The chairlift makes it more fun and it's unique so people will want to give netball a go. People will want to try it out because it looks more interesting.
The cheerlift is not unfair. Most netball players aren't that tall. You can't expect a small player to defend a tall player fairly. It's a good tactic for smaller players.
I think the new move, the cheerlift the Mystics made up is a bit risky because if you weren't careful you could bend your fingers back. It's a cool move but someone could fake the shot and wait until the defenders are finished with their jump and shoot. It uses a lot of teamwork which is a good strategy to do. I think the cheerlift move is not cheating. I'm pretty sure over 1,000 netball teams would use this move within a week!
I think that it is fair because all you are doing is making a new, creative way of how to play netball. It inspires others to try new, creative ideas.
It's not cheating because it's not braking any rules and they didn't touch the rim. I think in Rugby you can pass forward to yourself...maybe it is breaking the rules just a little.
This is not cheating because she hasn't broken any rules and she did not touch the net either. Even in swimming history the costumes they wear has changed to full body suits to help them go through the water faster. Rugby, swimming and basketball have all changed. The youngsters have started practising the lift so netball will change too.
I think the new move is not cheating because it is not in the rule book then it is not cheating. They are going to put their reputation on the line because they are changing the game of netball. I think they should keep netball the same.
It should not be cheating because the players come from their places to do the lift and they don't step or anything. If they can do that consistently then definitely they should use it. Maybe it will change the game of netball but new generations equals new ways to play. Newer is better! I'm not sure what a step is, is it a flatfoot on the ground? If it is they could maybe land on the balls of their feet.
Isn't it just like the new driving rules. Not everyone liked them changing because it felt all uncomfortable. They'll get used to it, it might be all good.
I agree 100%. It is a very clever technique! You get lots of points for explaining it clearly. Good thinking.
I agree that it is fair because the other teams can do it as well. I liked how you said you wanted it more so the game would have more action.
I think it will change netball forever because the cheerlift is very different from any other moves. I think there would be more injuries.
You know how there is turbo touch I think there should be classic netball and turbo netball where you can use all these techniques.
I think it is a very good strategy and why not change it up a bit. It might help more people coming to watch netball and even more boys might play too.
I think there is actually more teamwork because they have to communicate even more.
It might encourage other players and teams to make a new strategy again. That could be different again.
I agree with you Hannah. It's better to communicate and there will be more strategies and the game will be more energising.
I agree with you Caleb. The cheer lift really inspires a lot of people to create an even better move.
I agree because other sports do change and she didn't touch the rim or the net so it should be fear
I think a little change isn't bad. Technically the cheerlift isn't a rule, it's a defending skill.
The cheerlift is a new way to defend but I am 100% sure their reputation will NOT be on the line, it's been done once so another try isn't risky.
It is true that not all netball players are not the same height so not all players will try this move because of this risk of this move is quite risky because of sore arms by doing the move all the time
Enjoying all your comments studio 22 - I agree with many of you that this is a cool and clever innovation. I also agree that it could lead to lots of new techniques too.
For me this is awesome because Netball has been pretty much unchanged for a very long time. Everyone just accepted netball as it was and then suddenly someone thought outside the square and came up with something completely new - Green Hat thinking at its best!
Even better, this is forcing other teams and other positions to think about how to combat it, prepare for it, adapt it, etc. Innovative thinking is great - taking innovative thinking and building on it is also great.
I hope you are all inspired to put on a Green Hat and rethink your sport, your learning, your life. Go-for-It studio 22.
